This past weekend was the Ink and Iron Festival at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. I cruised up there Sunday to do some shooting for the magazine and my site. Must tell you that while I got there at a bit after 10 I really didn't get it into till about 3. The tattoo portion was actually on the ship and to be honest looked like any other tattoo convention except stairs. Way to many stairs for me, it was on 3 levels on one end and had a lot of great artists that all seemed busy (a good thing). They did have a stage with live bands on the lower level which did set it a part a bit from others. I didn't spend to much time in there, got hard to move after a bit.
What set this one apart was the festivities outside. Vendor booths everywhere set up like a village, classic cars and choppers and 2 stages. I expected more cars then their were but was still decent showing. Highlights for Sunday was a cirque du soleil type act that was enjoyable, The Pin Up pageant where 2 of my favorite models took 1st and 2nd (wheres my cut ladies :) ) and of course the bands. Must say my favorite band there was one I never heard of before 'Mad Sin', kind of hard rock/punkish? Being press I was allowed in the pit in front of the stage, a dangerous place to be :) at one moment the crowd started pushing forward and pushed the rails up and almost squished us till the security rushed in and pushed back. Then one of the singers decided to leave the stage and enter the crowd....over my head.... Came out covered in glitter and silly string as well.
Overall it was one of the better 'Tattoo conventions' but I think the outdoor festival is what made it. Best part of the day was meeting so many people that I have talked to online and hanging out with fellow photographers and friends. Larry 'Darkman', Shannon Brooke, Johnny Angel, Susana 'Vestige', Jorge 'JMV', Rick, Shannon, Vanessa, Monica, Lindsey, Drea, Ivy, Daisy, Casper. If I missed anyone I am sorry still not fully awake. Heard Sat was even better, wish I would have made it.A photo gallery has been added to the events section on the free side. ***UPDATE 6/29 Added more image***
